Bark Psychosis - Replay

BARK PSYCHOSIS were one of the leading innovators in rock during their active period of 1988 to 1994. Their music, whilst almost traditional rock, spearheaded a whole new genre - post-rock. Through their use of samples to create textual soundscapes, they generated a unique sound, when the rock genre was staid and unchanging.

One of Bark Psychosis' innovations was the use of volume. On REPLAY, the barrage of guitars gives way to soft vocals and synthesizers - characteristic of the dynamics that infused the group's work.

The album artwork features photographs of St. John's Church where the live recordings were made back in 1991. The setting with its superb acoustics, perfectly reflected the group's musical style.

Starring alongside the five live tracks are some very special moments in the history of the band. Remastered versions of Reserve Shotgunman and Hex make their first appearance since release as B-sides. Also featured is a remix of Big Shot by Rudy Tambala of AR Kane, and the ultra-rare Clawhammer which originally appeared on a 1988 flexi-disc alongside an extract from the Spacemen 3 album 'Dreamweapon'. REPLAY collates rare, deleted and unreleased session material from the original quartet, and will be of interest to Psychosis fans worldwide

REVIEW FROM NME MAY 2004
The glorious roots of post-rock exposed. Bark with loadsa bite.

This compilation comes just as Bark Psychosis' influence is once again blooming with the current wave of post-post-rock, taking the ambient metal soundscapes and giving them a fresh dynamic poise (Jarcrew, Aerogramme, Oceansize). Yet there's more going on here than just noise. Evil and massive though every note is, there's mood, passion and - admirably for instrumental music - variety. 'Reserve Shotgunman' pulsates with Gang Of Four-ish bass while 'Murder City' is a totemically grandiose wonder. Showing up the beauty in pure evil, this is the Borg of rock music: assimilate with it and be changed forever. Dan Martin
